It has to sit on a proper pad

A standby generator needs a stable, level base that keeps it fixed in place and off bare ground. In hurricane conditions, a unit that isn’t properly anchored to a pad is a unit that can shift, and its connections can be stressed. The pad is foundational, literally.

It has to be elevated in flood zones

This is the Lowcountry-specific one, and it’s the mistake non-local installers make most. So much of the Charleston peninsula and the surrounding islands sits in FEMA AE and VE flood zones that the generator usually has to be raised on a pad above the base flood elevation. The logic is simple and brutal: the storm surge or king tide that takes out the grid is the same water that will drown a generator sitting too low. It has to have proper clearances

Standby units need specified clearances from windows, doors, and property lines, partly for safe exhaust and airflow, partly for service access. Plan your fuel before the storm

A generator that’s installed perfectly still needs fuel to run through a multi-day outage. This is where a little planning ahead of the storm pays off enormously.

  • On natural gas, you’re in good shape: the unit draws from Dominion’s gas line, which keeps flowing independently of the electrical grid, so runtime is effectively unlimited. Nothing to top off.
  • On propane, top off the tank before hurricane season and again whenever a storm is forecast. Refills get very hard to arrange right after a storm, roads flood and suppliers are overwhelmed, so you want to go into the outage full and sized for several days. Why standby beats a portable in a real storm

People sometimes ask why they can’t just ride out a hurricane with a portable generator. You can try, but a storm exposes every weakness of the portable approach:

  • You have to set it up outside, in the storm. A standby unit is already in place and starts itself; a portable means dragging it out and starting it by hand, often in wind and rain at 3 a.m.
  • Carbon monoxide kills people every storm season. Portables must run well away from the house, never in a garage. A standby unit is permanently and safely sited.
