Most people picture a standby generator as a single box that hums along in the side yard, and in a sense that’s true. But what actually keeps your Charleston home running when Dominion Energy South Carolina goes dark is a small system of parts working in a set sequence, one that begins the instant the grid drops and ends when it’s safely back. Understanding that sequence takes the mystery out of the purchase and helps you ask an installer the right questions.

The transfer switch is the brain

If there’s a single component to understand first, it’s the automatic transfer switch (ATS). This is the piece that decides everything. It sits between the utility feed coming into your home and your electrical panel, and it never stops watching the incoming power.

When a summer thunderstorm drops a line or a hurricane knocks the grid out across Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties, the ATS notices the voltage vanish, usually within a few seconds. It’s the switch, not the generator, that starts the whole chain of events. The outage-to-restore cycle, step by step

Here’s what happens from the moment the power blinks out to the moment your generator shuts back down. The entire thing runs unattended, whether you’re home, asleep, or three states away.

  1. Sense the outage. The transfer switch detects that utility power has dropped or fallen out of a safe voltage range. To avoid reacting to a momentary flicker, it typically waits a short, deliberate delay to confirm the outage is real.
  2. Signal and start. The switch sends a start command to the generator. The engine cranks, fires, and warms up for a few seconds until it’s producing clean, stable power at the right voltage and frequency.
  3. Transfer the load. This is the critical safety step. The ATS physically disconnects your home from the utility line before connecting it to the generator. That disconnect is what protects utility crews working on the downed line from being shocked by power flowing backward, and it’s exactly why this work is never a DIY job.
  4. Run. Your home now runs on the generator. Depending on how the system was sized and wired, that’s either your whole house or a prioritized set of circuits: HVAC, refrigeration, well pump, a few rooms of lights and outlets.
  5. Watch for the utility’s return. The switch keeps monitoring the grid the entire time it’s running. When Dominion’s power comes back and holds steady for a set period, again, to make sure it’s really back and not just teasing, the switch prepares to hand control back.
  6. Transfer back and cool down. The ATS reconnects your home to the utility and disconnects the generator. The engine then runs unloaded for a short cool-down before shutting off, which is easier on the machine than an abrupt stop. It’s now idle again, ready for the next outage.

Layered on top of that cycle is a weekly self-test, called an exercise cycle: the generator starts itself for a few minutes on a schedule to keep the engine lubricated and confirm it’ll fire when it counts. If you’ve ever heard a neighbor’s unit briefly rumble to life on a clear Tuesday, that’s what you heard.

The core components

Strip a standby system down and you’ll find the same handful of parts on nearly every unit:

  • The engine. An internal-combustion engine, much like a car’s, that turns fuel into rotational power. It’s the part that needs oil, filters, and periodic service, see generator maintenance.
  • The alternator. Bolted to the engine, it converts that spinning motion into the alternating-current electricity your home uses.
  • The controller. A small computer that manages starting, monitors voltage and frequency, runs the weekly self-test, and reports faults.
  • The enclosure. A weather- and sound-rated housing that lets the unit sit outside through Lowcountry heat, rain, and salt air.
  • The transfer switch. The brain described above, mounted near your electrical panel.

Air-cooled vs. liquid-cooled

Generators shed engine heat one of two ways, and which one you need is mostly a function of size.

  • Air-cooled units use a fan to move air over the engine, the same way a lawnmower does. They’re common in the roughly 10 to 24 kW range that covers most Lowcountry homes, and they cost less up front.
  • Liquid-cooled units run coolant through the engine like a car radiator. They handle bigger, sustained loads and long runtimes better, which is why larger homes and the higher kilowatt ratings tend to be liquid-cooled. They cost more but are built for heavier duty.

Natural gas or propane

A standby generator doesn’t store its own fuel the way a portable does. It’s plumbed to a fuel source and draws continuously while it runs. In much of the Charleston metro, that source is the natural-gas line Dominion already runs to the home, which means no tank to bury and effectively unlimited runtime as long as the gas keeps flowing.
